Spicer Family

Descendants of Abraham Spicer

 Generation No. 1

        1.  Abraham1 Spicer was born 1695, and died in Possibly in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.  He married Sarah Gillingham Abt. 1721 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, daughter of Yeamans Gillingham and Mary Brodwell.  She was born November 28, 1699 in Oxford Twp., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died Bef. May 10, 1731 in Wrightstown, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.

Notes for Abraham Spicer:

Abraham Spicer's religion was Quaker and his occupation was a Currier.

I have tried to establish a connection to Thomas Spicer who first arrived in Newport, Rhode Island in 1638. Thomas, who was first married to Ann Grant, daughter of Henry Grant, who bore him two daughters, married Michael or Michal Ann Jenkins, Feb 5, 1636 in Gravesend England.

They had four (or five) sons, Jacob, Thomas, Michael, Samuel and possibly a fifth child John. (A John Spicer has been attributed to this family by a couple of researchers.) It is possible that John would be the link to Abraham. ( Rootsweb World Connect Project, entry by Alice Bowman, although not intirely accurate, provides a direct link between Thomas & Abraham, via John.)

I will withhold any absolute findings till they are proved.

Abraham and Sarah moved to Wrightstown, Bucks, Pa., where their children were born. John & James are the only children referenced to this couple. Are there more?

Marriage Notes for Abraham Spicer and Sarah Gillingham:

Shortly after their marriage, Abraham & Sarah moved to Wrightstown, Bucks, Pennsylvania.

Generation No. 3

        12.  Yeamans3 Spicer (James2, Abraham1) was born May 16, 1766 in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, and died March 21, 1815 in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.  He married Sarah Sands 1786 in Pennsylvania.

Notes for Yeamans Spicer:

Yeamans Spicer was found in Middletown, Bucks, Pa. in 1810. He had his spouse and three sons, identified as Moses, b. 1787;  William, b. 1794 and Benjamin, b. 1800. He was listed as Yeoman Spicer on the census.

7-11-1776 - James Wildman produced certificates from Gunpowder MM in Maryland in behalf of Yeoman Spicer residing with him.     Quaker records of Bucks Co., Pa

7-2-1793 - Yeoman Spicer has been guilty of fornication and accomplished his marriage with a woman not in our Society.      Quaker records of Bucks Co., Pa

Marriage Notes for Yeamans Spicer and Sarah Sands:

Yeamans Spicer had a spouse by 1786 but was that spouse and mother of his three sons, Sarah Sands or someone else? Quaker records say that in 1793 he was found guilty of fornication and accomplished his marriage with a woman not in "our" society. Was this a second wife or was this Sarah Sands.

Question: Was he really ever married to Sarah Sands?

The only mention of Sarah being Yeamans spouse is in a World-connect post by Alice Bowman in 2003. She has ancestors for Yeamans Spicer all wrong and I believe that she may have the spouse of Yeamsn wrong also. Alice does not answer post-ems or E-mails so her info cannot be verified.

More About Yeamans Spicer and Sarah Sands:

Marriage: 1786, Pennsylvania

Children of Yeamans Spicer and Sarah Sands are:

+      15               i.    Moses4 Spicer, born May 10, 1787 in Pennsylvania; died Aft. 1831 in Richland Co., Ohio.

+      16              ii.    William Spicer, born Abt. 1794 in Pennsylvania.

17             iii.    Benjamin Spicer, born Abt. 1800 in Middletown, Bucks, Pennsylvania.

Notes for Benjamin Spicer:

Benjamin Spicer was in Middletown, Bucks Pa., for the 1830 & 1840 Census.

In 1830 His family structure was:

One male..........5 to 10

One male.........20 to 30

One male.........30 to 40      Benjamin age aboutt 30+

One female......Under 5

Three females.5 to 10

Two females...10 to 15

One female.....30 to 40      Benjamin's Spouse

Benjamin seemed to have someone else living with him as his age could not account for the one male and two females in the 10 to 20 to30 bracket.

In 1840 His family looked like this:

 One male..........Under 5      new child

One male..........15 - 20        from 1830

One male..........40 - 50      Benjamin age abt 40+

One female.......10 - 15        one of the children from 1830

One female.......15 - 20        one of the children from 1830

One female.......40 - 50      Benjamin's spouse

The 20 to 30 year old male is gone as well as two of the 5 to 10 year old females and one of the 10 to 15 year old females. who were they and where did they go?

Generation No. 4

        15.  Moses4 Spicer (Yeamans3, James2, Abraham1) was born May 10, 1787 in Pennsylvania, and died Aft. 1831 in Richland Co., Ohio.  He married Nancy Ann Scott Bet. 1807 & 1810 in Pennsylvania.  She was born April 15, 1783 in Pennsylvania, and died in Ohio.

Notes for Moses Spicer:

The link between Moses Spicer and Yeamans as his father is tenuous at best. Yeamans was found on the 1810 census in Middletown, Bucks, Pa with a spouse, (possibly Sarah Sands who is supposed to have married sometime in his life.) Three male children listed as One under 10 Years, (Benjamin b. 1800) two 16 to 26 years, (Moses b. 1787 and William b. 1794)

Consider the following concerning Sarah Sands or the spouses of Yeamans Spicer: Yeamans, b. 1766, probably married in 1786 at age twenty. His oldest child would then be Moses, b. 1787. In 1793, Yeamans Spicer was found guilty by the Quaker Church "of fornication and accomplished his marriage with a woman not in our society. (Quaker Records of Bucks Co., Pa.) It does not say that he was expelled from the church as others were, so what does this mean.

Was he married to Sarah Sands in 1786 and the church just caught up with the fact that she was not a Quaker, (I find that hard to believe) Or was the mother of his first child gone and he took up with another,(Sarah?) about that time.

Information from Fall 1979 issue, Michiana Research Journal.

Moses Spicer's list of children was taken from a Bible list published in the Fall 1979 issue of the Michiana Research Journal, titled "Hiram Spicer Family Tree". It Lists Moses, his birth, the birth's of his children by his first wife but does not give her name, unless it is the Nancy Ann Scott who was born April 15, 1783. It list a marriage of Moses S. Spicer to Nancy Ann Watt on May 4, 1831. It is not kown if this is the same Moses.  It also list several deaths but no mention of Moses in the death list.

1820 - Moses Spicer Bought Land in Richland Co., Ohio from Garret Cruzon (Ohio Land Records)

Moses was found in Washington Twp., Richland Co., Ohio in 1830. He is listed with a spouse, age 40 - 50; a male child age 5 - 10 (George W., age 7) another male child, age 10 - 15, (Hiram, age 12), a male age 50 - 60, (Moses, age 57). A female child age 5 - 10 (Lydia Ann, age 10)

Moses did not show up on any other census, before 1830 or after. His sons, on later census, say he and their mother were born in Pennsylvania. Have not been able to determine where at in Pennsylvania.

Moses and family showed up in Ohio between 1823 and 1830.

Notes for Nancy Ann Scott:

This is probably Nancy Ann Scott who was listed in the same Bible reference as Moses. She was born April 15, 1783 and might possibly the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah 'Randall' Scott. This would make her an Aunt to Lydia Ann Scott who married Hiram Spicer.
